The real problem with the S-300 in Syria: Russia’s embrace of the axis of evil

A breaking news item was published yesterday which furthers the discussion concerning the deployment of the Russian S-300 system in Syria. ImageSat International, an Israeli company which operates imaging satellites, has identified the location of some of the S-300 components in Syria. These are located in a dangerous area, close to strategic facilities of the Syrian regime which have already been attacked by Israel. This underlines that the critical issue at hand is not the S-300, but rather Russia’s growing alliance with the rogue regimes of Iran and Syria.

Russia’s S-300 in Syria: dangerous, but limited

Russia’s recent transfer of its S-300 air defence system to Syria has generated much commentary, some of it sensational in tone. In the attached file, the publicly known details of the deployment of the S-300 to Syria are discussed, with an emphasis on the small scale of the effort, consisting of just three battalions. A table at the end of the file summarises the known versions of the S-300 system, showing that the most advanced version of the S-300 has been delivered to Syria. It is suggested that the system’s forthcoming combat debut may well prove disappointing to its operators.
