Russia’s recent transfer of its S-300 air defence system to Syria has generated much commentary, some of it sensational in tone. In the attached file, the publicly known details of the deployment of the S-300 to Syria are discussed, with an emphasis on the small scale of the effort, consisting of just three battalions. A table at the end of the file summarises the known versions of the S-300 system, showing that the most advanced version of the S-300 has been delivered to Syria. It is suggested that the system’s forthcoming combat debut may well prove disappointing to its operators.
